Refuge Ceremony with Khenpo Jamyang Lekshey
We are honoured to welcome Khenpo Jamyang Lekshey to Sakya Thubten Ling Buddhist Centre in Bournemouth for his annual visit to the UK, where he will bestow the Refuge Vows.
Khenpo Jamyang Lekshey is a senior monk and teacher from the Sakya Centre in Dehradun, India, the principal monastery of the Sakya tradition in India. Having dedicated many years to the study, practice and teaching of Tibetan Buddhism, he offers authentic Mahayana and Vajrayana teachings, empowerments and transmissions within an unbroken lineage. His annual visit provides a rare opportunity for people throughout the UK to receive these precious teachings directly from an experienced Sakya master.
What is a Refuge Ceremony?
Taking refuge in the Three Jewels – the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha – marks the beginning of the Buddhist path.
The Refuge Ceremony is a traditional Buddhist ceremony in which participants formally express their intention to follow the teachings of the Buddha and to cultivate wisdom and compassion for the benefit of all beings.
Whether you have been studying Buddhism for many years or are just beginning your journey, taking refuge establishes a lifelong connection with the Buddhist path.
Why Take Refuge?
In all schools of Buddhism, taking refuge is regarded as the foundation of Buddhist practice.
For those wishing to practise Vajrayana Buddhism, taking refuge is traditionally required before receiving tantric empowerments and undertaking deity practices.
This ceremony therefore provides an ideal opportunity for anyone planning to attend the Medicine Buddha Empowerment or Green Tara Empowerment during Khenpo’s visit.
Who Can Attend?
Everyone is welcome.
No previous Buddhist experience is required, although we encourage anyone wishing to take refuge to have a sincere interest in following the Buddhist path.

Is the Refuge Ceremony free?
Yes. There is no charge to attend. Optional donations are welcomed to support the centre and future Dharma activities.
Do I have to become a Buddhist?
Taking refuge is the traditional ceremony through which a person formally becomes a Buddhist. We therefore encourage participants to take refuge only if they sincerely wish to follow the Buddhist path.
Do I need previous experience?
No. The ceremony is open to anyone with a genuine interest in Buddhism.
Will seating be provided?
Yes. Chairs and meditation cushions are available throughout the ceremony.
